Warning: This page discusses self-harm and contains advice on first aid for injuries caused by self-harm
Atmosphere believes everyone who self-harms deserves support, no matter how or why they self-harm, and no matter what sort of support they are open to receiving.
Despite the help that people need though, it can be difficult for many to access due to availability, stigma, and fears about what telling someone about their self-harm may cause. Atmosphere gives people a way to engage informed self-help, and signposts people to other services should they wish to use them.
Atmosphere uses weather to express the importance of using different tools and methods to manage self-harm, along with illustrating how unique everyone’s experience with self-harm is.
Some people prefer certain weather, some people are able to deal with different types of weather more easily than others. In this way, people also have different experiences with mental health. When dealing with the weather, there are many options and different people prefer to deal with it in different ways. Ways to manage self-harm are the same, everyone will have ways of managing self-harm urges and caring for themselves that work better for them.
Free kits can be supplied to people who are interested in using them for managing their self-harm. They include items intended to prevent self-harm through managing emotions and urges, with the option for first aid items relevant to the most common forms of self-harm to be included too.
The kits will also have a booklet and three leaflets. The leaflets cover many methods of managing self-harm urges through and first aid instructions, along with providing an understanding of what self-harm is and where to get help.
The booklet contains a safety plan, a journal, and a space for a person to write to a loved one about their self-harm in the hope that this will make finding help easier.
Atmosphere uses social media to tell people about the brand and the services provided, but the primary purpose is to educate people on self-harm, reduce the stigma around it, open up a conversation, and equip people with the knowledge they need to take care of themselves and others. With younger people most at risk to self-harm out of any other age bracket, through using social media, Atmosphere hopes to reach out to these groups and get them the support they need.
